Author guidelines

Before You Begin

Fungal Taxa: Systematics & Evolution is an international, peer-reviewed, diamond open-access journal dedicated to fungal taxonomy, systematics, and evolutionary biology. Before submitting your manuscript, please review the journal’s Aims & Scope to ensure alignment.

The journal operates under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY 4.0). Authors retain full copyright, and no publication fees (APCs) are charged.

  

Types of Submissions

We welcome the following categories of manuscripts:

● Research Article: Full-length reports of original research in fungal taxonomy, phylogenetics, or systematics.
● Monograph or Revision: Comprehensive treatments of fungal groups, including species revisions and taxonomic syntheses.
● Nomenclatural Note: Short communications on typifications, new combinations, or other nomenclatural clarifications.
● Review Article: By invitation only; critical syntheses of current knowledge.
● Short Communication: Concise reports of significant new taxa or systematic insights.
● Opinion or Perspective: Commentary on emerging concepts, methods, or debates in fungal taxonomy and systematics.

Manuscript Preparation

General Formatting

● Paper Size: A4 with minimum 2.5 cm (1 inch) margins.
● File Format: Submit manuscripts as editable text files (.docx preferred).
● Font: Times New Roman, 12-point.
● Spacing and Layout: Double-spaced, with continuous line numbering and page numbers in the bottom right corner.

Structure of the Manuscript

● Title Page: Concise, informative title; full author names and affiliations; corresponding author details.
● Abstract: One paragraph, maximum 300 words, summarizing objectives, methods, key findings, and conclusions.
● Keywords: Up to five, not repeating words from the title.
● Main Text: Typically organized as Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion.
● Taxonomic Treatments (for new taxa): Must include diagnosis, description, type designation, etymology, notes, and registration numbers.
● Acknowledgments: For contributors who do not meet authorship criteria.
● Figures: Minimum resolution 300 dpi; captions numbered consecutively and placed below figures.
● Tables: Editable text (not images); numbered consecutively with explanatory notes below.
● Supplementary Material: Datasets, high-resolution images, or additional files submitted separately.

References

Follow APA 7th edition for citations and references. Examples:

● Journal article: Sharma, R. K., & Iyer, A. (2022). Diversity of fungi in Asian forests. Fungal Taxa: Systematics and Evolution, 10(2), 123–145. https://doi.org/10.xxxx/xxxxx
● Book: Verma, D. (2021). Fungal biodiversity of Asia. Fungal Taxa Publishing.
● Book chapter: Smith, J. A. (2020). Marine fungal biodiversity and its ecological roles. In D. Verma (Ed.), Advances in Mycology Research (pp. 45–67). Fungal Taxa Publishing.
 

Ethical and Legal Requirements

● Nomenclatural Compliance: All new taxa must comply with the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants (ICNafp). MycoBank registration is mandatory, and accession numbers must be cited in the manuscript.
● Specimen and Data Deposition: Type specimens must be deposited in a recognized herbarium, fungarium, or culture collection. Sequence data must be deposited in GenBank (or equivalent), with accession numbers included.
● Funding Sources: Clearly list all sources of financial support. If none, state: “This research received no specific grant from any funding agency.”
● Declaration of Competing Interests: Disclose any personal, professional, or financial relationships that could be perceived as conflicts of interest.
● Plagiarism: Only original work will be considered. Submissions are screened for plagiarism, and manuscripts with a similarity index exceeding 10% may be rejected.


Final Submission Checklist

Before submitting, ensure that:

● All required files have been uploaded.
● The manuscript contains all essential sections.
● References are complete and correctly formatted.
● The text has been carefully proofread.
● Permissions have been obtained for copyrighted material.
● All required declarations (funding, conflicts of interest, nomenclatural registrations) are included.
